Feds defend data mining projects

Honchos from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and DARPA, speaking to Congress, defended the data collection programs, CAPPS II and the Total Information Awareness research project. The programs, according to their defenders, are intended to improve screening of airline passengers, and increase national security, not for willy-nilly, capricious snooping on the citizenry.

Bleeding heart liberals, members of the conservative Eagle Forum and folks in-between, have been skeptical. More hearings addressing privacy concerns are scheduled for the U.S House Committee on Government Reform’s Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations, and the Census in a couple weeks.
