Ex-punk Star, Exene Cervenka, now Broke Librarian

I surfed to this story from the UK-based Mirror because I saw the name “Exene,” hoping it would make mention of my all-time rock idol, Exene Cervenka, formerly of the seminal LA punk band X. By golly, it did. Exene, since I last read anything about her, apparently married and divorced actor Viggo Mortensen, and is now suing him for support, saying that she currently works as a teacher and a librarian, making well below what she needs to support their son, Henry, now 16. A librarian! I knew I liked her.

    Actually, Exene (now apparently going by the name Christene Edge) is now, according to her declaration in support of order to show cause re modification of child support (a copy of which is at Smoking Gun), an “assistant teacher/librarian at Westland School, Inc.” in Los Angeles. Westland is on Mulholland Drive, but I doubt even private schools on Mulholland Drive pay their assistant librarians much more than any other place does.

    She’s really not asking for that much, considering papa’s income. Test prep, college visits, etc.

    I surfed to the school’s website, and immediately wanted to make fun of it, but only because I’m jealous and wish I had educational options for my kids. I’d settle for a public magnet school. We were lucky to have a parent-cooperative for pre-k and k, but couldn’t afford the tuition for more than that.

    An ex-X fan, you say? Once an X fan, always an X fan. The best live show I ever saw was an X show in a small venue in Champaign Il, around 82. They only played for about 10 minutes before stopping and storming off stage, bickering with each other. They returned half an hour later, Exene resplendent in her “US Olympic Drinking Team” sweatshirt, and ripped into an awesome set, but not before John Doe pointed to Billy Zoom and shouted, “There’s your fucking prima donna!” I was so jealous of my friend Barbara, as she ran into the band at a bar before the show and got to shoot pool with them. She also got to play pool with Sting later that year, not knowing who he was. He introduced himself as Gordon Sumner.
