Steve Fesenmaier writes The NYTimes Reports new technology is also draining the stockpile of a system of lesser-known numbers: Internet Protocol addresses. Those are the arcane number combinations separated by three periods, such as 1.123.10.250, that are assigned to every device, including cellphones and hand-held organizers, that communicate over the Internet. Each IP address must be unique to distinguish it from other devices on the Internet.
