Dusting off archives and culling the present from the past

Anonymous Patron writes International Herald Tribune: In recent years, the word archive is mentioned over and over again in relation to established houses. When a designer at such a company produces a collection that nods to the house’s history, he is said to have been delving into the archives, even if there aren’t any per se.

In fact, until fairly recently, many houses did not maintain extensive archives. Space was precious and dresses that took up too much room were frequently simply given to the designer’s friends or loaned out never to be seen again. “Archive” was frequently a catchword to denote house history rather than an actual collection of clothing and documentation.”
