Donated Books Becoming a Sought-After Commodity — Perhaps Too Much So?

The executive director of the charity that benefits from the donation bins said his program helps provide books and promote literacy in underserved communities, often in poor or predominantly immigrant communities.

“We’re serving different constituencies,” said John Barger, executive director of Reading Tree, the national nonprofit that donates some of the books deposited in local bins.

Dottie Bonnett of the Silverdale Friends of the Library suspects the bins have led to fewer donations to her group and others.
