Does Anyone STILL take Lunch Hours without Fear

search-engines writes “More employees today are forgoing the traditional long lunch and taking an abbreviated afternoon break instead, using the time they’d normally eat to keep working or get other errands done.
According to a survey of more than 1,000 workers on behalf of KFC.
Sixty-three percent say the lunch hour is the biggest myth in office life today.

    not fear exactly…
    I remember my first post-college job at a law firm, as an hourly library assistant, I was *mandated* to take an hour lunch. Most people, however, continued to work even though they weren’t being paid for that hour. Being no sucker, I took my hour every day at that job. Now that I’m salaried, I don’t usually take more than 20-30 minutes unless I have errands to run, but I have to give my eyes a break from the computer at least once in the work day or I’ll get a migraine. Lots of folks here do the ‘eat at the desk’ thing (which I am actually doing right now!).

    We are actually encouraged to take not only our lunch hour, but also two 15 minute breaks during the day. How we break up the day is pretty much an individual decision in cahoots with the department supervisor. As long as we have coverage, everything is copacetic. It’s only those of us work-a-holics (who? me?)who have a hard time getting out of their chairs in favor of sunlight.

    I refuse to do that. They are not paying me to be that ineffecient. I can get my job done in 8 hours and then, I go home.

    As part of that I *LEAVE THE BUILDING* for lunch. Otherwise, people feel free to interupt you because you are just too darn convienent. Even if its just sitting out in my car in the parking lot, this makes sure that I have plenty of time to relax. I won’t even participate in Brown Bag lunch programs b/c in my mind, that is just an attempt to get me to work through lunch.

    I catch flack for it, but I also suspect that, unlike my more workaholic coworkers, *I* am not going to burn out!
