Documentation of Internet Filtering in Saudi Arabia

Seth Finkelstein writes \”What is the scope and pervasiveness of Internet filtering–not simply
in individual libraries or schools, but on a global scale? Professor
Jonathan Zittrain and Berkman Affiliate Ben Edelman are conducting
research on filtering in multiple countries worldwide; July 15 marks
the release of the first study in the series, reporting some 2,000+
web pages blocked in Saudi Arabia.

Among the findings:
1.) the Saudi government maintains an active
interest in filtering non-sexually explicit content for users within
the Kingdom.
2.) substantial amounts of non-sexually explicit content
is effectively inaccessible to most Saudi Arabians.
3.) much of
this content consists of sites that are popular elsewhere in the
world.
The complete study, including methodology and details on the
results, is available. \”
