Dispute pushes library groups apart

Seems there’s trouble brewin’ down in Jacksonville, Florida. The Jacksonville Public Library Foundation is expected to meet next week to decide if it still wants to raise $16 million in a capital campaign to benefit the library system after a heated exchange of words with members of the library board this week.

The non-profit foundation is raising $3 million for enhancements to the new Main Library expected to open late next year, $3 million to maintain the enhancements and a $10 million endowment to help with special programs.

A problem has arisen because the foundation wants to keep its meetings private to protect potential donors, while members of the library board, the public group that runs the library system, wants to be kept more in the loop.
