Disposal of library books: Librarians must take great pride in their jobs

Anonymous Patron writes An English Editorial from Japan says we must preserve a society where anyone can easily obtain and read books of all kinds, and openly debate and criticize opinions verbally as well as in writing. Four years ago, a librarian of many years standing at a municipal library in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, discarded 107 copies of books authored by directors of the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform (Tsukurukai), and critics such as Susumu Nishibe and Shoichi Watanabe.

A court found that the librarian arbitrarily got rid of the 107 books out of her personal animosity toward the Tsukurukai and its supporters. It concluded that the defendant violated the authors’ right to freedom of thought and expression-a violation for which damages must be paid.”
