Digitial libraries in Oregon

Madcow writes “Medford’s Mail Tribune has this about the direction one library system sees coming.

“Working under a recent $46,534 grant, Southern Oregon University will work with the Southern Oregon Historical Society and the library systems in Jackson and Josephine counties to convert historical materials into digital form.

In January, Jackson County libraries will begin offering books on tape that can be downloaded through the Internet and played on an MP3 or burned onto a CD.”

Confession: I used to work there, and the director of the PL didn’t use a spreadsheet to budget, but paper and pencil. However she can see the inevitable digitization. I suspect the librarians there are dismayed at this statement: “”I think much of the reference collection will be online. We won’t be expanding the reference section in the print version.””

Which makes me wonder about how much information technology you have to know to be able to make decisions about it for a system.”
