Demolition Derby entry carries library’s ‘Race to Read’ message

A Fun Story from Cecil County [MD] a 1979 Ford station wagon representing the Cecil County Public Library will be entering the demolition derby this year. The car\’s name is \”Infomaniac\”, and will be driven by a bricklayer and farmer, not a librarian.
The Infomaniac is just one part of the library\’s increased presence throughout the nine days of the fair. Programs featuring crafts, storytelling, puppet shows and balloon activities will be offered in a special booth designed to promote the library\’s visibility and provide information as well as educational and fun activities. There also will be visits by \”Sneaks,\” the Cecil County Public Library cat mascot, who will be wearing a gold \”Race to Read\” T-shirt.

\”Sometimes public libraries can be too quiet for their own good; people may not know how much the library offers and that these great educational services and programs are fun and free,\” said Denise Davis, library director. \”When I first came to the library, our Board of Trustees told me they were concerned that a surprising number of people they met did not know about our public library. So I asked our staff to consider how we could reach our community and they told me that our county fair brought everyone together and we should be there. We decided it was really important to have a presence at the fair. The staff took it from there.\”
