We’ve heard it before, indeed we read it here from time to time. We hear that the internet crawls with predators, seeking to sexually assault children and teenagers.
Well, come to find out, it’s bull.
Sure, the internet has its share of predators and perverts, just like your local mall, convenience store, and public library has its share of scum. Yet what are the numbers? You know, the actual facts?
According to computer security expert Bruce Schneier, they’re much lower than you’d think. Why do we think they’re higher? Obviously the media has something to do with that. In fact, a parenting magazine requested that a New York Times journalist write a story on the dangers of the internet. Then they rejected it when he didn’t write something intended to provoke fear.
And I just want to point out
And I just want to point out that the internet did not invent sexual predation on the young. It may have made it easier, but back in my pre-teen and teen years, creepy older dudes never needed computers to proposition me. They did it right to my face.
If Sex is All You See …
Then sex is all you’ll get. It’s a question of focus.
agreed but
It’s hard to focus, when the airwaves are full of sex and scandal, email is full of spam about girth etc., websites are full of inuendo and more, and none of us wear blinders. Makes the promise and the excitement of sex LESS appetizing.
I will never use the word girth again, I promise.
Girth!
Now you’re talking!
