Hot jobs now from CNN says Challenger and Monster identified Librarians as “hot” because we are needed far beyond the school and public library systems. Corporations, government and advertising agencies, law firms, museums, research laboratories and medical centers are just a few of the arenas Challenger noted have need for those with library science degrees.
They list average salaries as $60-$65k.

Are they kidding? Really, does anyone really make that, even in cities like NY, San Fransisco, or LA? I would be quite suprised to hear that librarians make so much in any setting.

That lists mean as 60,583, with median being 56,500, that still seams very high, what am I missing?

In corporate libraries, that doesn’t seem farfetched. I recently saw a posting for a library associate position, requiring only a Bachelor’s, at a firm in Denver. The salary was very nearly what I make as a degreed specialist librarian in a public library. It wouldn’t surprise me if an MLS would get you 60k at that library.

Well, considering that there was just a job posting (either on Publib or Web4Lib) for a branch librarian in Las Vegas, salary something like $55-$71K with MLS and 2 years experience, yes, some librarians definitely make $60K.

I am in Washington, DC and I do think there are librarians around here earning that amount, particularly in Federal Libraries and maybe law firms. It also costs alot to live here (rent and homes are pricey), and I wouldn’t want to have to raise a family in the DC area on what librarians get paid–although I guess there are folks who do it.
I am amazed that this survey says librarians are “hot jobs”. Where? I don’t think there are so many great jobs around. Sure, there are jobs in the DC area, many with contractors, but the pay is often piss-poor for a master’s degree. I don’t know where Challenger and Gray comes up with this.
