Controverial New Archivist of the U.S.

Anonymous Patron writes “From the Washington Post: An interesting bio of the newly appointed Archivist of the United States and the conversations, polite and otherwise, over how he got the position to begin with, his past scholarly activities, and especially the role he’ll play in allowing access to sensitive materials. Much of the debate surrounds the release of or restriction of access to presidential papers.”

    Speaking of National Archives…
    Former Clinton national security adviser Sandy Berger will plead guilty to taking classified material from the National Archives, a misdemeanor, the Justice Department said Thursday.

    Just renewing the original objections
    In December of 2003, when President Bush asked former Archivist John Carlin to resign (without giving a reason for doing so), a whole host of professional organizations and their constituents were up-in-arms – and for good reason. ARMA, ALA, and others were concerned (among other things) about the disregard for the 1984 law that created NARA in the first place.

    To his credit, Carlin agreed to stay in place until a suitable replacement was confirmed. Legalities aside, we should probably give the new guy a chance to do the job. But I think it’s also good that he knows people are watching.
