Complaints Made That Two Library Books Promote Pedophilia

A Short Piece from Sacramento, California, says some books at Sacramento’s main library recently generated some complaints that they appear to promote pedophilia, which is illegal. On Thursday, those books were temporarily removed from public view.

A staff member was disturbed by two of the books: “Never The Same,” which shows a man and a boy on the cover; and “To Want A Boy,” with a drawing implying an adult-child sexual relationship.

    Director Knowledge
    Is it common for a director not to know the content of displays in their library? How are displays handled at other libraries?

    At mine, the director chooses the topics and the rank and file collect the information and construct them. She reviews them and gives them her final approval.

    Regardless of the books contained within the display in this particular instance, I find it disturbing that a Director does not review such things first before they are viewed by the public.

    Anyone?

    At our location, displays are created by many staff members, both with and without degrees. There is no “review” by the branch manager. Often, the selection of materials is collaborative, but there is no oversight per se. I’m sure that branch size is a factor here. We are a large regional library, and our manager relies on staff to do a lot of work autonomously.

    Reality Check
    Thanks for the Reality Check. My boss is a very involved manager and I do not work in a public library…but I was curious as to what was a normal process. As I suspected, our movements here are scrutinized at a very micro level.
