Committee Says “The Giver” Isn’t for Young Children

News Out Of Iowa on a school district committee in Cedar Rapids that decided elementary school teachers should not teach that “The Giver.”
Lorrie and Shaun Holcomb didn’t want to start any trouble. They just wanted to protect their son. “We weren’t trying to ban it from the whole school district or anything like that,” Shaun Holcomb said.

The important thing is all Cedar Rapids fourth graders are safe from a book that that made some parents uncomfortable. Remember, if you don’t like it, it’s no good for anyone.

    This isn’t about a book being on the shelf, its about being in the curriculum. I’m a fan of the book but something that covers the euthanization of babies is pretty heavy fodder for 4th grade.

    Okay I am not that impressed by the book in question, other than it has a writing level well above the American Chillers series.

    I have a daughter in the 4th grade, and thanks to my home having lots of books and her mother being one of the most capable and intelligent human beings I have ever had the honor of knowing, I am sure this book would not be a hardship for her in terms of handling the content. But I will admit that the standards of parental involvement in education and guidance in my home is completely above the national average.

    What I really question is the average parent possessing the education or intelligence to tell the school what they should teach.

    If the parents don’t want their child to read the book then they should tell their child not to read the book.

    Do they want to ban electrical outlets because their fragile little child might jam a fork in one?

    Small minded people make me want to hit them with a stick.

    Oh and the teachers should spend more time teaching the basics than encouraging children to write to this committee to parrot the teachers’ sentiments. The NEA does enough brainwashing already.
    I recall a recent poll that showed ~ 1/3 of HS students think things should be censored before publication. I don’t agree with them, but at least they made their own decision.
