Chinese-American Librarians Appeal for Earthquake Aid

In response to the May 12 earthquake disaster in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, a U.S.-based librarians’ organization has put out an appeal—and a means—for librarians in this country to help.

A special, tax-deductible donation page on the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) Web site provides a PayPal link that’s easy to use by would-be donors who may have tried to access other sites, particularly that of the Chinese Red Cross, and experienced frustration due to the high volume.

“It’s the worst natural disaster China has experienced in the last three decades,” points out Min Liu, assistant director of the Long Island Library Resources Council, who’s studied and worked as a librarian in this country for 14 years. “[China] had an earthquake in 1976—and 260,000 died—but this one is worse because of the [mountainous] location.” Blocked mountain roads, she says, have made the rescue effort extremely difficult.
