Anonymous Patron writes “One from Jacksonville, Florida. A Lake Wales elementary school agreed to remove a children’s book from its library after a parent complained about some of the work’s subject matter.
Spook Hill Elementary’s media committee voted yesterday to remove “Anastasia Again!” by Lois Lowry from its library shelves.”
Beer!!!!
Oh My God! We must protect the 9-12 year-olds from any mention of the existence of BEER!
(Why do I suddenly feel like I’m channeling Zippy?)
On Beer
Bill Hicks once had something to say about situations like this:
The Supreme Court decided that pornography was something that induced sexual feelings but had no artistic merit. Hrmmmmm… Sounds like every beer commercial I’ve ever seen.
Once again, the criteria was met to pull a book: A parent complained.
One out of Six ain’t bad, is it?
The trick is, however, to complain about 6 books total. Since they’re not removing EVERYTHING the parents wants, and only removing one, they’ve done a damn good job of standing up to her. (sarcasm, by the way).
One parent complains. Just one. It’s not good enough that the parent can decide what her child reads; she gets to make sure that no one else’s child has access through the school library to that book. And the school rolls over and plays dead. Nice.
