Child porn case spotlights libraries’ Internet policies

Anonymous Patron writes “The Reno Gazette Journal, from Reno, a dude was using one of the Washoe County Library’s adult, nonfiltered computers in northwest Reno to download child pornography, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of possession.

While his case drew little media attention, it sparked intense discussions among library officials about how to handle suspected illegal behavior by computer users.”

    Handle it in the same way illegal behavior by Toyota drivers, or illegal behavior by cappucino drinkers is handled: by calling the police.

    Illegal behavior is illegal behavior and there is no inherent right to privacy when one conducts their illegal activity in plain view on a public access computer terminal.

    Library records may be sacrosanct, but if I see you looking at kiddie porn on the public Internet machines I’ll smack your head into the keyboard and then call the cops.

    It always worries me when there are, “intense discussions among library officials.” The outcome is occasionally just a tad reactionary…or on the hysterical side.

    Just call in the Heat, ban the person, and be done with it.
