Chartiers-Houston Community Library Gets a Grip on Funding Struggle

Like most PA libraries, the Chartiers-Houston Library (Washington County PA) was just performing its duties to the community as an enclave of knowledge and inquiry…little contemplating how much money it takes to run the library year in and year out…that is, until the money ran out.

Like many public libraries in Pennsylvania (for that matter, around the country), they sustained a great financial blow when state funding for library operations was slashed in half in 2003. The cuts were particularly difficult to face after statewide funding had ballooned to $75 million in the years just prior.

Now the library is raffling off a motorcycle , and making other efforts to ramp up their funding, and not just for nice add-ons, either.

Like their business manager Diane Betts says, “We’re like a family living paycheck to paycheck.” Story here .
