Carnegie Libraries Anniversary

ChuckB writes, “As listeners of today’s
Writer’s Almanac
will know, today is the day in 1901 on which Andrew Carnegie gave $5.2 to the City of New York to build 65 libraries. Keillor quotes Carnegie: “The man who enters a library is
in the best society this world affords; the good and the great welcome him, surround him, and humbly ask to be allowed to become his
servants.” Not a bad thought to have framed on the wall of public libraries.”
