Canadian Libraries fighting for rate

The Vancouver Island Regional Library is petitioning the House of Commons to support a private member’s bill to guarantee access to a special postal rate for mailing books.

Libraries across the Island have a petition in support of the subsidized rate, which assists in the sharing of books. For return mailings the current fee is about one-twelfth regular post. Canada Post only guarantees a reduced library book rate until January 2008.

“The cost of the loss of this discount for VIRL would be approximately $140,000 per year. Many VIRL jurisdictions cannot afford this added cost,” said VIRL chair Peter Wainright.
