British Library concerned about DRM systems

The Reader’s Shop writes “The BBC reports that the British Library is concerned about Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems blocking libraries’ legal rights to provide access to materials under copyright law and Fair Use provisions. Because DRM systems don’t automatically turn off when a work is no longer copyrighted, holders of copyrights will be able to retain control over materials longer than they are legally entitled to. Another concern is that the software neeeded to unlock DRM protected files may not be available when a copyright expires causing the content to be lost forever. The All Party Parliamentary Internet Group is conducting a hearing.”
