Books with Positive Portrayals of Aging/Older Characters

describing books portraying aging and older adults in a positive light. Numerous studies have found that while American children have a
positive view of old older adults in their own family, they have a negative world
view of aging.”

    Probably calling older people “old coots,” even denying they exist, doesn’t help much. Keep in mind, “coothood” is a sliding scale. When you are 15, it is 25; when you are 30, it is 50; when you are 50, it is 75.

    “Studies have found” is such an interesting phrase–as though no people were involved.

    So true, nbruce though, writing as a 50 year old, I’d have to up the age of “coothood” to 90 years plus. So much about age is individual, don’t you agree? Today’s BBC online home page has a listing of well known people who’ve died this past year – many of them made it well into their late 80s and were still thriving until the end.

    Personally, I would like a list of books with a positive, and reality based, view of men and women in their mid to late 70s and well above that is geared towards those of us who are approaching “coothood” ourselves.

    We’ve got a pretty stacked deck, in the USA, agin “coothood”, alas. But like the phoenix, we may yet rise from the ashes!
