    I thought there was something wrong with me
    While I’m delighted with our library’s success with two standing, much-loved book clubs, I’ve never really understood the appeal, and have been relieved that others have wanted to facilitate our programs. Reading is a pretty intense, private activity for me, and I don’t necessarily want to share it with others. Glad to know that it’s not just me!

    Book Clubs
    I am positive that book clubs all over the country are more than happy not to have “Li Robbins over at cbc.ca/arts” rant at their discussions. I don’t know of a single book group that forces anyone to become a member. Also, most members read other books besides the books selected for discussions–and enjoy their solitude as well as sharing a good read. The group I am in discusses a wide range of books from all genres. The books for discussion are usually suggested by the members who are well read. We also use lists of award winning books, read reviews and try to read about a different period of time, culture or perspective–not books from the top ten bestsellers list generated by the publishers. People often comment “if not for book group I might have missed reading this great book.” We have hosted authors, attended readings at the local university after having read an author’s work and have lively discussions and sometimes disagreements over books and–heaven forbid, even enjoyed each other’s company. We usually meet at the public library–but have hosted receptions where we can drink wine (not from an oversize bottle)–or beer. Sometimes some of us gather at a local bar afterwards and continue our discussion. I am a member of a group of are very open minded and accepting people–I don’t think Ms. Robbins would find it a very good “fit”.

    Yeah…she was unnecessarily negative. I don’t hate bookclubs, they’re just not for me.

    To each their own, I suppose.

    I enjoy being a part of two book clubs but I realize that they are not for everyone. However, this writer seems so bitter about something that she has not experienced yet nor has the desire to. A simple polite ‘no, thank you’ is usually enough of a response to an invitation that you mean to turn down, but to spew this much vinegar about being invited to join a club seems odd.
