Book Clubs: The final chapter?

A Very Defiant Duckling Named Ender dropped in This Economist Article on book clubs. Many are largely unaltered since the 1970s, but that is about to change. Bertelsmann is selling its American clubs and has put the rest under strategic review. Book clubs are in for a radical overhaul at the very least—and some people think they are headed for extinction.

    Dropping book-of-the-month clubs
    I withdrew from my two groups (after many years and thousands of dollars) when they switched to a pre-pay model. Before, you could review the book and then either pay for it or return it. And intertia usually meant just paying for the ones I hadn’t gotten around to looking at; I almost never sent them back. But I’d rather wait a month or two to review them via the local library than prepay for something and hope they’ll refund things properly if I don’t like it.
