Shouldn’t those who think journalers with web logs should be spending more time in the lab doing research have to prove the journalers are not blogging at home in their free time? I mean, isn’t everybody supposed to be allowed to have a life?

Then again there are some tenured faculty who do blog that express opinions that could call into question their fitness for tenure.

Perhaps this is the time for scholars to re-evaluate the tenure process. I gleaned from the article that tenure is given through the individual departments at each university. Could that be too narrow a focus? Not being OVERLY familiar with the process, is the granting of tenure somewhat akin to the college admissions process whereby institutions are looking for “well-rounded individuals”, rather than automatons who are skilled at regurgitation?

I do think blogs are becoming more integrated with the educational process…indeed, one could use many of them as examples to teach critical thinking skills! If, as mdoneil states, there are tenured faculty who blog that make one question how they got tenure to begin with, let’s treat the goose as the gander, and use that as a tool to measure whether one gets to KEEP tenure as well as have it conferred.

says he suffers from a huge ego. Which would you think would hurt in a tenure review? Blog? Ego? Perhaphs the department already has enough faculty in his exact specialty? You never know. I suppose pinning the blame on the blog gets people agitated. The only thing for certain: it brings traffic to his blog.
