Black caucus stops short of ‘Mockingbird’ ban in Nova Scotia

African Nova Scotian school officials stopped short of calling for a ban yesterday on novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird, but they would prefer controversial classics be kept out of the classroom.

After meeting yesterday in Truro, the African Nova Scotian School Board Caucus said many students feel insulted and \”dehumanized\” by the \”harmful and inappropriate messages\” contained in some classic works of literature.

Caucus chairman Phil Best said they discussed To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, In the Heat of the Night by John Dudley Ball and Underground To Canada by Barbara Smucker . . .
