Bill would limit information on state Web sites

Gary Price spotted This One on a bill in Ohio that would change how information is added to state Web sites.

If two private vendors offer the data, then government agencies could not continue providing it without approval from the State Controlling Board, a seven-member panel that approves unbid state contracts. Court administrators said the provision could have prevented them from posting opinions on the court Web pages because the information is also available for a fee through services such as Lexis and WestLaw. Gary’s got more On The ResourceShelf.

“More and more, it’s the way people access information, so restricting access to that information – for the sole purpose of protecting an industry’s ability to profit from its distribution – strikes me as anti-democratic.”
