Here\’s a follow up on that group determined to have all materials dealing with witches or witchcraft removed from Middletown, CT, schools. The group sponsoring the petition is made up of a number of devout Christians who feel that books such as \”The Witch of Blackbird Pond\” — which is taught at the Cromwell Middle School — is anti-Christian and glorifies the practice of witchcraft. The group would like to such books, which include the \”Harry Potter\” books, removed from the school system.
Not suprisingly, an overwhelming number of responses through media outlets and Web sites were blasting the group\’s efforts. Members of the same group caused a stir earlier this year when they rallied for the annual field trip to Salem, Mass. to be canceled. The trip, however, went on as planned.
\”This is intolerance and bigotry at its purest. Hitler would have been proud of these people,\” wrote Rev. Gisela G. Oeding in a message posted on Web site of The Middletown Press on Tuesday. \”The thought that children will suffer because of their parent\’s hatred and fear breaks my heart.\”
