Bangkok seeks to be book capital

The Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand yesterday announced an ambitious plan to prepare Bangkok as a candidate for Unesco’s World Book Capital in 2008, in a bid to promote books and encourage reading.

The association, in cooperation with other private and public sector organisations, will launch the campaign at BookExpo Thailand 2005, beginning on October 6.

“There needs to be a co-operative drive to push and motivate people in the country to read as much as possible, said Thanachai Santichaikul, president of the Publishers and Booksellers Association.
