Award Winning Book Denied to Some Ontario Students

Daniel Phelan sent in News From Ontario where the school board in York has removed Three Wishes, and other boards like Toronto are still picking through a minefield of censorship and political debate trying to decide how to respond to a complaint from the Canadian Jewish Congress about the book’s suitability for young children.     From the first article:

    From the second article:

    In one passage, a Palestinian girl, Wafa, 12, said, “Killing an Israeli will make me feel glad. It will make me feel strong.”

    She added: “I am tired of them making me feel small and weak. I want to feel strong and proud.”

    Another Palestinian girl, Maryam, 11, said “there are women martyrs who do the suicide bombings. They are very brave… I have only one wish. I would like to go to heaven. Maybe in heaven there is happiness after we die. Maybe then.”

    Salam, the 12-year-old sister of suicide bomber Aayat Al-Akhras, who killed herself, a security guard and 17-year-old Rachel Levy at a Jerusalem market, said she would have made her sister a special breakfast on the day of her attack, had she known about it.

    …some viewpoints need to be suppressed from kids.

    You mean viewpoints such as: It is wrong for Israelis to kill Palestinians by firing military munitions into crowded marketplaces, or to effect political assassination by firing Air-to-Surface missiles into congested traffic?

    Books like Three Wishes are not censored because they are “age inappropriate” so much as because they are exposes of the resentment propagated by oppression.
