“Whale Talk” author Chris Crutcher said he would not force students to read his book. But, he said, pulling it off the shelves is a mistake.
The Missouri Valley community is wrestling with what to do with the book, which several parents and students have objected to. Missouri Valley School Superintendent Dr. Tom Micek has formed a committee to review the text, which has been temporarily removed from the high school’s sophomore English curriculum.
“I think it is a big mistake to remove the book before the hearing,” Crutcher said. “It invites censorship and allows a few people to exert a lot of power.”
