Potential Partnership between Netflix and Brooklyn PL

Brooklyn Public Library and Netflix are considering a partnership to bring DVDs and videos into the homes of library card holders, Business Week reports.

This initiative “would involve creating a list of movies that Netflix would provide for library patrons for free, the paper said, which would save the library system the cost of buying the expensive DVDs. In return, the system would pay Netflix for the service.” This service would be part of the library’s plans to increase customer service by incorporating more home delivery of library items.

While a Netflix representative quoted in the article was unaware of any possible partnership, John Vitali, chief fiscal officer for Brooklyn PL, is quoted as expressing a desire to “work with Netflix and really get that inventory together, really use Netflix as the delivery mechanism.“

Dionne Mack-Harvin Becomes First Female African-American Director of Brooklyn PL

Library Journal reports that Dionne Mack-Harvin has been named executive director of the Brooklyn Public Library. This appointment makes her the first female African-American to hold this position, and “the first African American woman in New York State to lead [a] major public library system.”

This appointment makes her the first female African-American to hold this position, and “the first African American woman in New York State to lead [a] major public library system.”According to her profile, Mack-Harvin served as Interim Director of Brooklyn PL since July 2006, during which time she lead the library system’s most successful summer reading program. Her appointment followed a nationwide search.

Mack-Harvin earned her B.S. in History and African and Afro-American Studies from the State University of New York at Brockport. She also has an MA in Africana Studies from SUNY Albany. She earned her MLS in 1996 from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at SUNY Albany.
