At the Center of a Literary Storm

Criticism of U.S. foreign policy appearing in the London Review of Books post-September 11th has earned it an equal amount of praise and death threats:

Cancellation of subscriptions and applications for new ones have just about equalled themselves out at the London Review of Books. But the backlash from the paper\’s coverage of events in the aftermath of Sept 11 is showing no signs of abating.

Death threats, messages of encouragement and letters of abuse have all been dropping through the Bloomsbury letterbox of one of the country\’s most erudite publications. A caller last week promised a delivery of dog excrement; another wished for the early demise of the entire staff . . . Never in the paper\’s 23-year history have passions been aroused with such intensity.
