What some people won’t do to get kids to read books…
Glen Acres Elementary School (IN) librarian Lee Foerster was “slimed” last week. The sliming was a reward to students for reading almost 34,000 books this school year. In class, the students read and took tests on almost 16,000 books. Story here.
On the subject of slime, is that what kids really want–maybe yes? maybe no?
What do you think is the best incentive to get kids to read? Slime? Sitting on a roof? Pie in the face? Pencil case? Bookmarks? Your experience and recommendations please LISNewsterz.

It’s a shame that kids have
It’s a shame that kids have to bribed to read.
Bribes or rewards?
I don’t know how I feel about incentives for reading and I think that studies show it is not necessarily effective but I also don’t find many non-readers signing up for Summer Reading at my library. The main participants are kids who are reading anyway. If cheap plastic toys will get non-readers to read, then I’m all for it.

It’s a shame about parents
There are kids who have to be bribed to read because there are parents who did not teach them that reading can be fun.
There is nothing that cannot be found offensive by someone, somewhere.
Another librarian gets what she had coming…
Everyone wants to feel or get a reward for a job well done. Why can’t we do this for the kids? So many folks, that don’t work with kids, don’t want to see kids getting prizes during summer reading.
If a small incentive or gimmick helps a child feel good, get into a great habit or reading, I feel that it is a positive reinforcement.
Besides I have many adults wanting into this year’s reading club to get a chance to win a bike. We had donated bikes given to our system this year. Some kids will read whether they get a sticker, bookmark or a chance at a prize. Others need that little extra boost.
How many folks enjoyed that little extra tax break this year? I know I am. Kids need to feel important, good and encouraged too.
I say let’s give kids a little, in a smile, time well spent helping them get a book or yes getting dunked in a tank to get them to read.
I would love to do a pie in the face and stay up on our roof. I have wanted to do that for years.
Yes, it’s a gimmick, but it makes them feel good.
