Announcing Global Librarian

Glenna Marr writes “Launched September 6, 2002, Global Librarian is a unique international partnership of public libraries.
The participating libraries are Southampton City Libraries (UK), Surrey Public Library (British Columbia, Canada) and Vaughan Public Libraries (Ontario, Canada). This venture allows patrons of these three libraries to access benchmark-standard reference services through their Web site virtually round-the-clock. Reference library staff will be checking for incoming e-mails every hour for twenty hours out of twenty-four. Anyone e-mailing a reference question to one of the libraries, Mondays through Saturday afternoons will receive a response from a librarian as soon as the answer has been researched. Negotiations are taking place with a fourth library, the Eastern Regional Libraries in Melbourne,Australia, to bring the coverage to the full twenty-four hours before the year’s end.
