An Honor, Belatedly, for AL Librarian Juliette Hampton Morgan

Honoring librarian was long overdue”–

December 13, 2005–

The renaming Monday of the “Main Branch” of the Montgomery City-County Library system for a deceased librarian could not have been more appropriate.

In the mid-1950s, Juliette Hampton Morgan was harassed until she resigned from her job as chief research librarian after she publicly supported more equitable treatment for black citizens.

Honoring Morgan has a particular significance for
the editorial page of this paper , because much of the harassment she suffered was a backlash against letters to the editor to this newspaper in which she supported improved civil rights for black citizens, including a particularly moving letter supporting the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
