‘Potter’ movies may scare kids more than books, experts say

Anonymous Patron writes “A love for “Harry Potter” led two Purdue professors to write a chapter in a book surrounding the controversies of the wizardry novels. In order to gain knowledge about the subject the two professors, Deborah Taub and Heather Servaty-Seib, performed meta-research by reading about research done by other professionals. They then wrote about the trends they discovered in the book Harry Potter’s World: Multidisciplinary Critical Perspectives. One concern that arose from their research is that the movies may be more frightening than the books. Research shows that visual images frighten more than words do, said Taub, assistant professor of educational studies.”

    Bunch of god damned, pseudo-academic fucking idiots.

    The beef I have with the Potter films is that cinema cannot express the full scope of writings. Rowling’s world is a fully-developed, self-consistant construct, and that is something that really cannot be portrayed in film. The Potter films simply do not meet expectations.

    Having just seen Prisoner of Azkaban, I can personally testify that the dementors are a big disappointment in the terror and suspense department. The scenes with the dementors focused too much on the special effects and not enough on creating atmosphere.

    Of course, I’m a cynical old crock instead of someone’s lab rat in a social experiment.

    The dementors are one thing but I’d much rather read about giant spiders (Chamber of Secrets) then watch them on the big screen.

    Lord of the Rings is also a fully developed construct but its much grander in scope and I think transferred well onto the big screen. With Potter its all the little things that count, the little details that make it so engulfing and are hard to fit into a 2-3 hour movie with any real effect.
