A Selfless Decision – No Raise for Indianapolis Library Director

Following up our earlier story comes the update from
ALA online of Indianapolis & Marion County Public Library CEO Linda Mielke declining a 4% pay raise that would have boosted her salary to about $122,000. She said in a statement that it sends the wrong message at a time when the library is cutting spending.

    Employees Hoping for a Union have Other POV
    Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library employees concerned about the institution’s future, want to form a Union…Since library CEO Linda Mielke took over in 2004, employees have lost overtime pay for Sunday work, annual 2 percent cost-of-living raises and health benefits for retirees.

    More power to them–but
    I have to disagree with the quote below

    “Library unions are quite different than, say, at a steel mill,” Magerski said.

    Bull if they have that opinion they are doomed. This is an attitude that white collar unions need to shake. Look at pilots unions they don’t take that approach and they have been pretty successful.

    Wise decision
    Damn right it would send the wrong message at a time when the library is cutting spending. It is very wise for the CEO to decline the pay increase offer. I am sure the rest of the staff would not be very pleased if she accepted the offer when everyone else is suffering.
