A Hipper Crowd of Shushers

As we now know, there are hip librarians in my hometown of Brooklyn according to this story from last week’s LISNews. But yesterday’s New York Times tells us a slightly different version of the same story about these Desk Set librarians (different reporters but essentially the same story and some of the same librarians)…Gary Shapiro of the NY Sun scooped the Times.

    Hip, schmip.
    I am so tired of stories about hip librarians. Do you notice that doctors and lawyers are never out publicly wringing their hands about their supposed hipness? That’s because they’re too busy enjoying the nice clothes and good haircuts that their decent salaries buy.

    Well, I would say that the alternative is to focus on real library advocacy – locally, for better salaries; state-wide and nationally, for more funding – instead of chasing red herrings like hipness.

    For me, the ideal alternative would be that hipness is irrelevant to the job that we do. But obviously, a story about people simply being good at their jobs wouldn’t sell newspapers.

    Hipness is irrelevant to doing the job, natch. But hey, I’d rather be viewed as hip than not (is it possible to be hip over 50?).
