A Google Project Pains Publishers

Anonymous Patron writes “Business Week Says major presses are raising thorny legal issues with the search giant’s initiative to digitize the books of the world’s great libraries.
In a May 20 letter, the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) blasts Google’s so-called Print for Libraries program for posing a risk of “systematic infringement of copyright on a massive scale.””

    old story or UP publishers misunderstood?
    According to Google Print’s Library project FAQ,

    “For library books still under copyright, you’ll only be able to see a few sentences.”

    That seems reasonable to me.

    Since when are publishers reasonable?
    Don’t you remember “The Wind Done Gone” lawsuit? Amazon’s “search inside the book” got flack from publishers too.

    The problem is, Google could cave on this issue if it threatens shareholder value. As mentioned previously (2nd paragraph), handing the reigns over to Google to preserve information can be problematic.
