Philly.com Reports a project that could reinvigorate the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and reinvent the Free Library, city officials are proposing to double the size of the library’s main branch and transform the musty Beaux Arts landmark into a modern media center with space for computers, cafes, performances and exhibits.
At a news conference yesterday with Mayor Street, library officials announced that they had commissioned a quartet of internationally known architects to help shape the vision for the expansion and to produce sketches showing how the addition might look. The library plans to present their ideas to the public in October before choosing one of the four as the designer for the $100 million project.
