Excerpt from larger story about what universities are doing to cut cost:
Whittier College in California cut one day of its new-student orientation, saving $50,000. Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., put a cap on students’ free printing in libraries and labs, limiting them to $60 worth of free printing per semester. Next year, students will be limited to $50 per semester.
Saving money
While I was a student at a state university they did some budget cuts. The school paper did a write-up about it. In the paper there was a story about how the university got rid of a janitor at a savings of roughly $30,000 (this was a few years ago). On the same page of the paper there was a story that the university president had a salary raise from $120,000 to $150,000. What was really stunning was that they take about a financial crisis and kill staff at the bottom while giving raises at the top to people that least need the raise.
The Chancellor of our state university system makes $220K. If we opened his job for $150k I know there would be a line of applicants. It is ridiculous the salaries that these adminstrators command. The next time your university needs to come up with 30 to 80 thousand dollars why not look to the salary of the president or the chancellor. I guarantee you can hire qualified people for less.
Ditto regarding coaches.
‘nough said.
