Great Western Dragon noted he had seen some rules the Seattle Public Library might’ve followed to avoid some trouble. The list, “(Un)desiderata 27 Snappy Rules for Good and Evil
in Library Architecture” is quite a good read!
Never create a cozy corner you don’t want occupied by a bag lady.
Ars longa, technologia brevi
Any sign worth making is worth making well, and lots of signs aren’t worth making at all.
Even if it’s stupid, as long as it’s legal, you can have whatever you want.

How I wish we’d had this!
Simple, yet so wise…
And since our library has been likened to a Chuck E. Cheese on more than one occasion…
I especially had to chuckle at the “Show your building plans to your custodians.” Yes. How many times (over and over and over) has one of our custodians told me this… It’s true, though. These are the guys that are going to be maintaining the place.
Though technology is not the main focus of a library, it certainly has its place in the library, and that’s not going to go away in the coming years… I would add to that list to plan for technology upgrades. Our building, though beautiful, was not really laid out with computers in mind. The computers are hidden in alcoves. Believe me, in a public setting you don’t want expensive equipment hidden anywhere.
Missed it!
Ahh the library world, so full of informational twists and turns. I posted something about this, and then completely missed Blake putting on LISNews. (For the life of me, I couldn’t remember the name.) Then today I visit Jessamyn’s and see the link which basically brought me back here.
Info tracking is wicked cool!
