March 30, 2000 — In the tradition of recognizing new library professionals,
3M announces the selection of three academic librarians as 2000 recipients
of the 3M/NMRT (New Members Round Table) Professional Development Grant.
The awards will be presented at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago during
the 3M/NMRT social, which will be held in conjunction with the ALA Scholarship
Bash, on Saturday, July 8 from 9 p.m. to midnight at the Navy Pier.
\”As we move into the new century, 3M continues to support and honor
ALA librarians who excel in their field,\” said Bob Decker, sales and marketing
manager for 3M Library Systems. \”As an advocate for continued education
and professional development, 3M believes that an important part of a new
librarian’s career is attending an ALA conference. This fundamental belief
was our motivation to offer the grant in 1975 and continues to be our motivation
today.\”
All national NMRT members are eligible for the award. The grant provides
recipients with airfare, accommodations, conference registration fees and
daily expenses for the ALA Annual Conference.
The 2000 3M grant recipients are Judith A. Downie, a reference/instructional
services librarian at United States International University Walter Library
in San Diego, Calif.; Laurel A. Littrel, humanities reference librarian
at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan.; and Tiffini A. Travis, a

Judith A. Downie
Judith Downie, a reference/instructional services librarian at United
States International University Walter Library in San Diego, Calif., has
been involved in ALA and NMRT since 1999. She is an active member of the
Special Libraries Association and the San Jose State University School
of Library and Information Science Alumni Association. In addition, she
is a member of the California Library Association, California Clearinghouse
on Library Instruction, survey and needs assessment committees for Region
V, Library of California. She is also a member of the Palomar Library Association,
where she serves as the newsletter editor and site Webmaster. She earned
a master’s degree in library information science from San Jose State University
in 1997. The Grant Committee recognizes Downie’s commitment to NMRT, her
local and state associations, along with her commitment to the library
industry.
Laurel A. Littrell
Laurel Littrell, a humanities reference librarian at Kansas State University
in Manhattan, Kan., has been a member of ALA and NMRT since 1997. Littrell
was the Association of College & Research Libraries editorial intern
from 1999-2000. She has also taken an active role in the Kansas Library
Association, helping to reactivate the New Members Round Table of the state
association, serving as Chair from 1997-1999. She is currently a member
of the nominating committee for the Kansas Library Association and has
also played an active role in the membership committee. In addition, she
is a member of the Music Library Association and serves as Chair of the
Voyagers Music Users Group. Littrell earned a master’s degree in library
science from Emporia State University in 1997 and has a Doctor of Musical
Arts in Music Composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
The 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant Committee honors Littrell’s
commitment to NMRT and her local and state associations.
Tiffini A. Travis
Tiffini Travis, a senior assistant librarian at the University Library,
California State University in Long Beach, Calif., is currently a mentor
for minority applicants to UCLA’s Department of Information Studies and
is an active member of the UCLA Diversity & Mentoring Committee. In
addition, she is also a member of the Black Caucus of the American Library
Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, Reference User
Services Association and the Southern California Social and Behavioral
Sciences Librarians Group. She is also involved in the Academic Business
Librarians Exchange, serving as Chair, and has been a member of the program
planning committee. She has also held several positions for the California
Librarians Black Caucus. Travis earned a master’s degree in library and
information science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1998.
The 3M/NMRT Professional Grant Committee recognizes Travis’s service to
state and regional associations and ALA, along with her commitment to the
library industry.

the grant every year to librarians who have been working in the field fewer
than 10 years. Recipients are chosen by the NMRT Selection Committee on
the basis of academic achievement, previous work experience, honors earned,
library association activities and financial need. The grant sponsors their
trip to the ALA Annual Conference. Ninety-five NMRT members have been presented
with the grant since its inception.

Libraries Earn More than $20,000 for Participation
in Fourth Annual Event
ST. PAUL, Minn. — (April 24, 2000) — A record number
of libraries throughout the U.S. participated in the 2000 3M Library Systems
Check-it-out Yourself Day at the Library event, which was held to kick
off National Library Week, April 9-15. Thousands of library patrons visited
their local libraries to check out materials on their own with the help
of the 3M™ SelfCheck™ System. A total of 350 participating
libraries qualified to win cash prizes from 3M Library Systems because
they had more than 100 patrons use the 3M SelfCheck System that day.
The Orem Public Library, Orem, Utah and The Austin
Public Library, Austin, Minn. each was awarded with grand prizes of $2,500.
The following libraries received $1,000 prizes: East Palo Alto Library,
East Palo Alt, Calif.; Clayton Community Library, Clayton, Calif.; Sunnyvale
Public Library, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Lee County Library System, Cape Coral,
Fla; Council Bluffs Public Library, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Niles Public
Library, Niles, Ill.; Hutchinson Public Library, Hutchinson, Kan.; Anoka
County Public Library, Blaine, Minn.; Cleveland Heights Public Library,
Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Westerville Public Library, Westerville, Ohio;
Tusla City County Library, Tulsa, Okla.; Ganser Library, Millersville University,
Millersville, Pa.; L.E.R. Schimelpfenig Library, Plano, Texas; Newport

In addition, the Yuma County District Library, Yuma,
Ariz. was recognized as the most creative in their promotion of Check-it-out
Yourself Day, and was awarded $2,500 by 3M Library Systems. The Yuma County
Library capitalized on the event poster, which pictured a young boy
in a referee’s uniform. The library hung baseball-like pennants with library
specific teams, such as \”Team Circulation\” and \”Team Reference\” and displayed
decorated baseballs throughout the library to pre-promote the event. The
day of the event, the mascot of the Yuma minor league baseball team, the
Bullfrogs made an appearance. The Library also partnered with area business
who hung event posters and gave gift certificates to the library for a
day of event drawings.
Check-it-out Yourself Day at the Library is sponsored
by 3M Library Systems to help jump-start National Library Week and create
awareness of technology at libraries, particularly the 3M SelfCheck System,
the industry’s first self-checkout technology. The day-long event, which
was held on April 10 this year, also helps libraries earn cash awards to
enhance their collections. Any library with a 3M SelfCheck System is eligible
to participate in the annual event.
\”Technology is helping people manage their time more
efficiently — at work, at home and at the library,\” said Susan Evans from
the Yuma County District Library. \”Promotions such as Check-it-out Yourself
Day give us another reason to promote such technology at our facility,
and show people how they can enhance their visit by making it more productive.
The fact that they help us earn additional resources gives them added incentive
to take a few minutes to learn about a process that can save them potentially
hours of time in the future.\”
Library participation in Check-it-out Yourself Day
has increased steadily since the program’s inception in 1997, said organizer
Judy Nelson of 3M Library Systems. \”We have a commitment to help libraries
market their technology so that they can realize its full potential within
their facilities,\” said Nelson, who notes that, in addition to Check-it-out
Yourself Day, 3M reviews community relations requests for support and offers
publicity guides for certain 3M products, such as the 3M SelfCheck System
and the
e-Branch Library. \”We want to bring more value to
our relationships with libraries — beyond valuable products. 3M has become
a resource for its customers on marketing, education and more.\”
