20 Percent of Joplin Public Library’s Staff Lose Homes in Tornado

The deadly tornado that devastated the town of Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday spared the Joplin Public Library’s building, but not its staff.

“The library is unscathed. We’re located enough north of the devastation that we were untouched,” said Jacque Gage, the library’s director. “However, eight of our staff have lost their homes and a couple of others have homes that are significantly damaged. Out of a staff of about 40, that’s a huge proportion,” she said.

The library is open today and running with a skeleton crew.

“Even some of our people who didn’t lose homes they have had difficulties in getting to us without going clear into Kansas and coming back around,” Gage said.
