Librarian Turned Cookie Maker

Vandermeer, who was on a career path toward becoming a librarian until a few baking and cake-decorating courses changed her mind, is excited about the opportunities opening in front of her.

She plans to grow her business, and hopes to one day open a few bakeries — maybe even write a cookbook. (She uses her own recipe formulations in her baked goods, and guards the secrets.)

The Strahov Monastery Library in 40 Gigapixels

Jeff Martin of 360cities has produced the largest indoor photograph ever: a 40-gigapixel, 360-degree image of the main hall of the 868-year-old Strahov monastery library in Prague, Czech Republic. Almost 3,000 images were shot over five days and then stitched together to make the mega-picture. You can take a tour of the picture, swing all the way around, and zoom in on interesting details.

Books Everyone Should Read

Which books should everyone read? Information is Beautiful’s David McCandless shows how graphics have the answer
Do Top 100 Books polls and charts agree on a set of classics? David McCandless & Miriam Quick
scraped the results of over 15 notable book polls, readers surveys and top 100’s. Both popular and high-brow. They included all Pulitzer Prize winners, Desert Island Discs choices from recent years, Oprah’s Bookclub list, and, of course, The Guardian’s Top 100 Books of All Time. A simple frequency analysis on the gathered titles gives us a neat ‘consensus cloud’ visualisation of the most mentioned books titles across the polls. Do you agree with the consensus?

Why is Barnes and Noble performing well as a business while Borders has filed for bankruptcy?

Why is Barnes and Noble performing well as a business while Borders has filed for bankruptcy?
This is a question that many of us at Borders asked ourselves frequently and Evans thinks the answer is not a simple one. As someone who has given this a tremendous amount of thought and was Director of Merchandise Planning & Analysis for many years, Mark Evans outlined his assessment.

Stephen Abram Wins 2011 Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award

2011 Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award Announced by the Canadian Library Association
The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is pleased to announce that the 2011 CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is being presented to Stephen Abram of Gale Cengage Learning. The CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award is generously sponsored by Bowker.

Stephen epitomizes distinguished service: in his selfless contributions to this profession, his incredible intellect, and his willingness to sacrifice popularity for what he feels is right for librarianship. Stephen consistently demonstrates responsibility to the library profession. A one-of-a-kind librarian who, when he speaks around the world never fails to identify himself as a Canadian librarian, is willing totake risks, make tough decisions, and do whatever he can to further librarianship. He has volunteered countless hours to three of the foremost library associations in North America: CLA, OLA and SLA, sometimes working away in the background on committee tasks, and other times leading the associations as President – of all three.
