Reading is For…and To…The Dogs

What do you get when you bring children, dogs and books together? You get happy, confident children who love reading books.

The Beaverton Valley Times paints this cozy picture for its readers: If you’ve spent much time in the Beaverton Library in recent years, you may have noticed children huddled comfortably in small-sized chairs reading aloud to fluffy dogs resting nicely on the floor.

Eager to sit at the feet of these youngest of readers, the lucky dogs completed a rigorous screening and training with their handlers (owners) in order to earn this privilege. The kids doing the reading need only to sign up and choose a text they are able to read independently, and make sure they show up on time to read to the dogs. This program was coordinated by children’s librarian Ginny Watt.

Looking For A Good Conference Speaker

I’m part of a committee looking for good speaker for a local librarian conference next year. All I can tell you is what we’re NOT looking for:
No tech gurus
No library 2.0
No future files
No gaming
No wikis, blogs or Second Life

We’re thinking more back to basics, good old fashioned librarian stuff. Ideas? Let me know.

Librarian’s Lush Parkside garden attracts unwelcome attention

The Buffalo News Reports On Jean Dickson’s lush front yard on Crescent Avenue received separate visits from the mayor, the city’s top inspections honcho and two other city administrators.

They didn’t come to admire the rose of Sharon, peonies and wildflowers that have created a distinctive landscape in this Parkside neighborhood.

City Hall leaders visited because an inspector sent Dickson notice that her garden was violating ordinances. That, in turn, touched off a tidal wave of e-mails and blog entries from outraged gardeners.

Graphic Novels are Rock and Roll

Here is an interesting article from ForeWord Magazine about graphic novels and the event about them held by the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. The article has a quote that I like by graphic novel consultant John Shableski, that “…the graphic novel (GN) is to publishing today very much as rock and roll was when it first entered the music industry mainstream: a strange format already familiar to the popular culture but not yet understood by the established distribution channels.”

As a fan, I would definitely say that graphic novels are oft-misunderstood. Also, it was fun to read all the quotations by various people in the graphic novel industry.
