Librarians become Pin-Ups to Fundraise for LIBs – IOWA

search-engines-web.com spotted a desmoinesregister.com Piece on some daring librarians in Iowa. Twelve librarians in Dallas County and 12 months in a year – after Paula James saw the movie “Calendar Girls,” it seemed like the perfect coincidence.

James, Adel’s library director, was looking for creative ways to raise money for the town’s $2.2 million facility, which is due to open in the fall.

She enlisted fellow members of the county’s library association each to pose – clothed and with books in hand – on a motorcycle, in a hot tub and in other uncharacteristic positions for a 2005 calendar.

A Cleveland MLS Reaction Is Borne

AshtabulaGuy writes A recent story submitted by Heidi Landskroener flagged that Syracuse University is planning to partner with Case Western Reserve University to bring library science studies back to Case Western Reserve University in Greater Cleveland. Christine Borne, a leading “NexGen librarian”, offered some reactions to the news by raising the matter of possible layoffs that could erupt if county-wide regionalization of libraries in Cuyahoga County occured after the present study is completed. Although there may become more competition in terms of educating new librarians, a glut of librarians may occur if Cuyahoga County libraries are consolidated down to only the Cuyahoga County Public Library and the Cleveland Public Library. There may be the problem that an increase in possibilities for librarian education may become superfluous or even harmful if consolidating regionalization occurs due to Ohio Libraries and Local Government State Fund cut issues.”

European Association of Sinological Librarians

Founded in 1981 after a workshop on sinological libraries and library work in Leiden, the European Association of Sinological Librarians continues to join sinological librarians from various European countries. The annual conferences are organized along loose lines: discussion and mutual exchange of experiences, as well as practical demonstrations are emphasized and more important than lectures and papers by members or invited experts. Experts mostly are found in the range of the members! Nevertheless, any member is free to propose any topic, any expert’s paper etc. to the next conference’s agenda, on the condition that preparation should be done by this member her- or himself. During the conference the share of informations, experiences, datas etc. plays an important role beside the conference hours as well.
A bulletin has been published until the year 1996, the new media of EASL’s homepage succeeds it at last, from 1998 onwards.

Patrons flock to library before storm

Neat Little Story From Massachusetts.
Hingham Public Library did a brisker-than-usual business Saturday before the blizzard hit the town.
“In anticipation of Sunday’s storm, library patrons helped generate some high numbers for library business,” said Library Director Dennis Corcoran. “Our staff handled a record-setting 3,337 checkouts and renewals from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The typical Saturday is closer to 1,800 items. The 3,337 figure represents more than the combined typical Saturday and Sunday circulations.”
